As we got on the van to head over
to Red Bank for the first day of teaching, the nerves and the excitement
started to kick in. When we finally
pulled up to Red Bank, after a bumpy ride in the van my excitement increased. I
couldn’t believe today was the day I finally got to meet the kids I would be
working with. When we first got to the
school, all the Red Bank teachers and all the UofL students joined in a circle,
and we all took the time to introduce ourselves and share what grade we would
be working in. We then headed to our
individual classes, as the kids started to enter the classroom, they all had
smiles on their faces they were so excited to meet the new guest in their
class.
I spent the day getting to know the student’s names, interests and
skills. One of the activities I had the students complete was to write letters
to students from my student teaching Placement. Shout Out to Ms. Petry’s fourth
grade classes from Klondike Elementary, for writing amazing letters. The student’s
faces lit up when they read letters from their new friends. They also had the
chance to write a letter back to these students, which allowed me to take the
time to get to know as they shared things they loved to do, but also allowed
the students to communicate with a student from another country. I quickly
learned from my experience today that I will learn more from these students,
and staff than I could ever teach them. I feel truly blessed to be able to work
with such amazing students!

How great to have the pen pal letter exchange. What did you learn about the students you will be working with?
